Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
